Back in December, an explosion destroyed a couple of buildings in my home town's downtown area. Several apartments and businesses were taken out by an
asshole who blew up his restaurant looking for an insurance pay off. (pic here
if you wanna see it).
After all this time, the insurance companies have finally agreed with each other so the wreckage can be torn down. Our local news station, which SUCKS ASS, had a story about the demolition tonight, along with a bit about former tenants who showed up today hoping to be allowed into the wreckage to salvage some of their stuff. One guy drove 8 hours to get here, another couple said they could see an heirloom piece of furniture from another building's top floor. The armoire is still intact, her grandpa made it and she wants it.
The reporter made a big deal about how the demo guys couldn't let the people in to get their stuff because of safety issues. Makes sense, I thought. Then the douchebag reporter put on a construction helmet, goggles and mold mask, and the demo guy let her and her camera man into the building, climbing what used to be stairs, to film the damage. Clothes still hanging in closets, food still on shelves in kitchens. What a slap in the face for those who lost EVERYTHING they owned right before Christmas.
(the demo guy did agree later to go in and look for specific items. he brought out a snowboard, some clothes, jewelry and an envelope of cash.)
This station is a local joke. no one likes the reporters, who act like they're movie stars if you happen to run into one, and they are famous for asking family members of murder victims or car accidents "How do you feel?" on camera. Dick heads.
anyway, just wanted to rant.
